Summertime Tips for your Pup

Summertime is all about spending time outside. And what better way to enjoy the weather than with your pup?

Regular exercise and play-time outside is crucial to a healthy dog’s life. Not only do they benefit from the cardio physically but they get the mental stimulation that they need to be content.

Seems easy enough to get your pet the exercise they need; but what happens when it’s simply too hot outside? We understand your concerns and are here to help! Here are a few tips to get your family pet the time they deserve outside while still keeping them healthy and safe.

Neighborhood Walks.

Going for a walk in the neighborhood is convenient and should become a regular practice for a healthy pet. Be prepared to change the times of taking walks during summer months when it gets too hot out. When walking your dog on the cement, first take the time to bend down and feel it with the palm of your hand. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to walk on. Opt for grassy fields and shaded play areas. You may have to wait until a later time in the day or go for an earlier morning walk. The rule of thumb is if it’s too hot to touch, it’s definitely too hot for your dogs paws.

Pad Burn symptoms:
Limping, refusal to walk
Darkened or discoloration on pads
Overly licking or biting at pads
Blisters or extreme redness
Missing patches on the pads

What to do: If you notice these symptoms, provide fast relief to your pet by taking them to a shaded grassy area. Flush the feet with cool water to avoid infection. Take them to your family vet for treatment as soon as possible.

Dog Beach Trips.

A trip to the dog beach is a great option for keeping cool. With plenty of space to play and run, the dog beach can seem like a harmless trip. You have the the ocean to cool off in but always bring an umbrella for shade. It is very important to pay attention to the heat of the sand as well. Avoid going during the hottest times of the day; the same rule applies here: if it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Another tip is to keep your pup hydrated! Bring a bowl for them to drink fresh water. The heat will wear them out and any consumption of saltwater will dehydrate them.

Dehydration Symptoms:
Sunken eyes
Lethargy/Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Dry mouth/gums
Loss of elasticity in skin
Drooling
Weak Pulse
Elevated heart rate

What to do: If your dog is experiencing these symptoms mildly, you can add a little salt, sugar and lime juice to their water to replenish their electrolytes or add an electrolyte solution to their water. Feed them foods high in potassium such as bananas or nuts, allergy permitting. If the symptoms are serious, seek medical attention from your vet immediately.

Walking on trails.

Trails are another great choice for outdoor exercise. The walk brings excitement and new adventure to your dog which is greatly stimulating. However, before hiking out on trails, brief yourself on local wildlife and any dangerous or poisonous species. Learn the proper ways to react to wildlife, recognize certain insects and snakes and what to do when you encounter them. Trails are best hiked in the cooler hours of the day but not exactly at dusk or dawn considering nocturnal wildlife will be more active. Consult with your local park ranger to find out the best times for hiking the safest and more enjoyable route with your dog.

Heatstroke Symptoms:
Pale gums, brightened tongue
Disorientation
Rapid or loud breathing
Difficulty in breathing
High Rectal Temperature
Thickened Saliva
Weakness/fatigue
Vomiting
Sagging skin around neck that doesn’t snap back after pinching
Bloody diarrhea

What to do: If your pet is experiencing excessive vomiting or diarrhea, take your dog to the vet immediately. If only some symptoms are occurring, you can take them to a shaded area and cool them off with a hose. Damp towels can also be applied for relief.
